I was in Paris in 2015 when Klein addressed all of we protestors there. She gave us 5 minutes of her time with a carefully prepared ‘speech’ on how bad climate change, or maybe on nothing, was and then promptly jetted off to London.
Thanks Stephen for delving into various reactions and the supposed causes of why children
could be born with Autism. The law of nature keeps a balance in everything, as when one thing is lacking it will more-than-likely be made up in some other manner. There is always a balancing.
In these children who 'we think' are lacking in something, are often exceptional in something else.
If looked at solely from an affection point of view, the affection they give is exceptional.
Albert Einstein was autistic and historians say, Thomas Jefferson, third president of the US, was in fact autistic. As were artists, Leonardo da Vinci, Vincent van Gogh, Michelangelo, Isaac Newton, Mozart, and Beethoven, also Tesla. Their focus is different, drawn mostly to special interests, and often accompanied with repetitive behaviours, difficulty in communication and interactions.
Elon Musk has announced he has Asperger's, a form of Autism.
The world would be a very dull place without them.
My next Doppelgänger post will be about "Asperger's" and why it's no longer a category on the spectrum. Not because that high functioning emotionally awkward person doesn't exist. However, there is a Red Line on that spectrum and diagnostic criteria for these victims were described in the late 40's.
When I was in high school in the early 70's, our senior class visited a "special ed" school for disabled autistic teens. Separate and not equal schooling, maybe 20 kids, mostly black-this was the south. They were very affectionate with us, although some supposedly become more aggressive in their twenties.
I also taught special ed in the early 80's as substitute phys ed teacher. Two classes of seriously autistic- without language- but able to follow fun dance lessons. Even twirl the sail cloth ribbons I brought in from scavenging a dumpster.
There is a clear difference between these victims- and those who claim to be autistic spokespersons, without even acknowledging their less fortunate kin.
It is interesting that you have had such close contact with autistic teens. There is nothing like personal connections to experience and observe as it develops empathy and understanding, rather than learning from books or docos. I look forward to your post on "Aspergers" and why it's no longer a category on the spectrum. The late 1940s is a long time ago and much would have evolved in this area since then. I have sporadic contact with a non-verbal autistic girl. You named this - without language - she has recently changed schools to one that better caters for her needs and is doing well.
Most comments, I hear or read about from those who consider themselves as autistic spokespersons, are usually quite negative, judgemental, defensive and confused.

She didn't sail away like Princess Greta?
No.
The thing is, there is a perfectly good train.

I figure it’s a little difficult to diagnose Autism in anyone before 1982, Fay :)
Not at all, they have their ways.
